San Diego Union-Tribune endorses David Álvarez as state Assembly candidate for the 80th Assembly district

Candidate Álvarez served as member of the San Diego City Council for 8 years

David Álvarez is a San Diegan politician that has been a member of the City Council and is now a state Assembly candidate for the 80th Assembly district, together with Georgette Gómez. Both have a similar track record, but Álvarez has distinguished himself due to his community service and for his preoccupation regarding the region’s educational system.

Candidate Álvarez was a member of the San Diego City Council for eight years and with this new position he hopes to achieve, he will be responsible of representing several different areas of San Diego such as Bonita, sections of Chula Vista, National City, among others. It should be noted that he has received endorsements from several political figures such as Rudy López, San Ysidro’s School District representative and National City Mayor, Alejandra Sotelo Solís.

Furthermore, several media outlets have endorsed his candidacy such as San Diego Union-Tribune, where they highlighted Álvarez’s work in San Diego going back several years. This has made him into the ideal candidate since he has solid arguments to prove he can lead, which is why this newspaper has recommended that people vote for Álvarez, due to his nuanced perspective and vision when it comes to many issues.

Álvarez explained that he wants to deal with the gap that exists in education achievements, build a university in Chula Vista, rebuild obsolete infrastructure, as well as analyze the urgent housing problems and improve mental health resources in the district of San Diego. It should be noted that Álvarez worked with Republican council member Scott Sherman in housing issues, by easing the construction of housing units, and simplifying and eliminating housing construction obstacles.

Moreover, Álvarez explained that he will be working closely with Mexican officials, for the value of solid binational relation is well understood.

Another issue that Álvarez thinks is very important is the environment, something he has stated he thinks the world should be more focused on. He has pointed out that electric cars won’t be able to reach their potential if there is not enough infrastructure, such as charging stations, to make them more reliable.

David Álvarez has repeated in several occasions that one of his worries is the kind of California we are leaving for our children, since children are still struggling after a year of remote, online learning. Violent crime went up 16% in Chula Vista, 12% in National City, and 20% in San Diego, and homeless camps are everywhere. The number of people dying in the streets because of addiction and mental disorders continues to rise. These are all the main issues Álvarez wants to deal with and improve.
