After a return to in-person classes and the traffic that this causes in Tijuana, Municipal Mayor, Montserrat Caballero proposed a “No-Drive Day” (Hoy No Circula) program to solve the road issues in the city. President of the National Chamber of Commerce (CANACO), Jorge Macías Jiménez thought that this could work to some extent, but, it wouldn’t improve mobility for people.

“Due to how we are currently living the mobility situation, it could work at some point to help reduce something, but it wouldn’t work on people’s mobility. If you have a car and one day you have to go to work and you can’t use it, it will cause you problems,” he explained.

The commerce leader emphasized that this is a matter that must be analyzed comprehensively touching on all subjects like the city’s public transportation, which is in pretty bad conditions.

Furthermore, he added that the government needs to solve the issue regarding the US border crossing, since it is creating lines that are 5 kilometers long. These pollute the city, causing a waiting time of almost 4 hours, and also cause traffic jams in different areas of Tijuana. This why it is important to solve issues with the roads and streets first.

After this proposal was publicized, hundreds of Tijuana natives expressed their displeasure with the program in the city, for they think that other aspects of Tijuana need to be improved first, such as public transportation.
