After clearing the migrant camp in El Chaparral plaza, the Baja California Government revealed that binational operations are being carried out to speed up the reopening of the pedestrian border crossing. However, there is still no exact date for its reopening in either government’s side, confirmed the state’s Secretary of the Interior, Catalino Zavala.
“There is no exact date right now. We will let everyone know in due course,” the official commented.
Due to this uncertain situation, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) revealed that they are not currently contemplating the reopening of the El Chaparral border crossing, also known as PedWest. This is because it is not considered safe at the moment and it would only be until optimal conditions are met when it can be reopened.
They also stated that the current pedestrian crossing will continue to be through the old border crossing known as PedEast, and that they keep working through peak hours so the absence of El Chaparral is not felt and to prevent long, waiting lines.
Catalino Zavala explained that the area is currently being recovered, and the migrants who were cleared of El Chaparral have their human rights completely guaranteed and are being given legal counsel regarding their political asylum.
