The role of immigrants in the United States is well known. They, despite having no papers to reside there, risk accepting heavy and difficult jobs with minimal pay to pay for their expenses in and out of the country in search of the “American Dream.” That is why A Day Without Immigrants wants February 14 to be the day where every immigrant working in the USA doesn’t work or go to school and joins one of several marches organized throughout the country.

Carlos Eduardo Espina is the administrator of this massive event. He is director and founder of several non-profit organizations focused on supporting immigrants and fighting for equality for them.

A Day Without Immigrants will take place on Valentine’s Day (February 14) according to the Facebook group dedicated to this movement. This is one of the most important days in the United States in terms of sales, and most of the things sold on this day are put on shelves by undocumented employees. This is why their absence during this day should cause a stir, and an awareness in the government and population at large.

The group titled A Day Without Immigrants, already has more than 70,000 people supporting the cause for this day, claiming that they will miss work and won’t send their children to school. The encouraging messages, videos, and posts of this movement are being made daily by people all across the United States as they organize to march in their respective states.

It should be noted that this movement goes beyond just raising awareness: it wants to encourage the creation of immigration reform that actually supports immigrants. According to the information provided in, Just The FACTS, by March 2021, there were more than 11 million immigrants just in California. Only half of these are naturalized American citizens, with the other 25% having some sort of legal status (visa or residency), with the rest being undocumented.
