A change to the Criminal Code will be proposed to the Congress of Baja California in order to ensure the safety and lives of journalists. The maximum punishment for anybody found guilty of killing a journalist will be up to 60 years in prison. The administration of Baja California, led by Marina del Pilar vila Olmeda, will introduce this change.

The Governor restated her conviction for the deaths of journalists Margarito Martnez Esquivel and Lourdes Maldonado López on the ninth episode of "Wednesday Morning with Marina del Pilar," and stated that the required steps would be taken to ensure the truth about the events of last week.

"As governor, lawyer, mother of a family, and Baja Californian, I absolutely condemn any kind of violence directed against individuals who seek the truth and keep public opinion active, maintaining the right to free expression and access to transparency," he said in front of the assembled media.

The incidents, according to Marina del Pilar, outrage society as a whole, which is why the three levels of government will work hard to remove impunity for those who assault journalists in a barbaric manner.

It should be noted that on Monday, January 24, the Governor of the State urged the Attorney General of Baja California, Ricardo Iván Carpio Sánchez, to establish a Specialized Prosecutor's Office to investigate the two crimes committed against both journalists. On Wednesday morning, Iván Carpio Sánchez named Atalo Machado as the head of the Special Prosecutor's Office, which will have all of the necessary human and material elements.

General Gilberto Landeros Briseo, the Secretary of Citizen Security, was also ordered to develop protocols and processes to support the investigation and follow-up activities in law enforcement cases to clarify these offenses.

In the same vein, Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda expressed gratitude to Mexico's President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who directed the deployment to Baja California of a team of experts in the field to help the investigation launched by the State Attorney General's Office (FGE).

The Secretary General of the Government, Catalino Zavala Márquez, was also present at Marina del Pilar's morning press conference, and is currently working on revising the Mechanism for the Protection of Journalists, in collaboration with journalists and various local, national, and international civil organizations, to make it more effective in its function.

"We Baja Californians know how to respond to and overcome the problems that emerge on the path to greater prosperity and democracy. These tragedies have left an indelible mark on our social skin, forcing us as a government to use all of the state's resources and might to clear the truth and bring the perpetrators to justice "He went on to say that there is already direct connection with both journalists' families.

Finally, the Governor noted that the government she leads would not relent in its efforts to close ranks in support of freedom, life, and social cohabitation in the state of Baja California via coordinated labor and social commitment.
