Marina del Pilar launches a journalist protection program in Baja, California

Journalists and human right activists will take part in the mechanism established by the governor of Baja California

The State Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders will be launched by the state government administration, led by Marina del Pilar vila Olmeda, to safeguard people who practice journalism and defend Human Rights in Baja, California. This Monday, January 24, is dedicated to Human Rights and Journalists.

The Secretary-General of the Government, Catalino Zavala Márquez; the Attorney General of the State, Ricardo Iván Carpio Sánchez; and the Secretary of Citizen Security of Baja California, General Gilberto Landeros Briseo, will make up this protective organization.

The installation, which will take place on Monday, January 24, responds to the necessity for journalists and anyone who defend human rights to be secure while doing so to avoid jeopardizing their lives or integrity. Catalino Zavala Márquez, the Secretary of Government, stated that the Mechanism is in response to the General Law for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, which encourages collaboration between the Federation and the States in the implementation of Prevention and Urgent Protection Measures.

People whose lives, integrity, liberty, or security are jeopardized due to the protection or promotion of human rights, as well as the practice of freedom of expression or journalism, must be protected.

According to the state official, this move demonstrates the state's essential obligation to promote, defend, and assure compliance with Human Rights in accordance with local, national, and international legislation.

Finally, Secretary Zavala Márquez emphasized that the Mechanism also conforms with basic legal principles for the growth of national democracy, as set forth in the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States and the Constitution of the Free Sovereign State of Baja California.
