The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has updated the conditions for travelers from Mexico and Canada to cross by land and ferry to the United States starting in early November.
The agency indicated that visitors must show proof of vaccination to enter the country for non-essential reasons, i.e. for tourism purposes.
However, for the rest of the foreign travelers, the restrictions will remain in place until January 2022, when they will also be required to show proof of vaccination.
The announcement was made yesterday by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas who announced the modifications to Title 19 under the guidance of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
NEW: Title 19 updates to occur in 2 phases:
— Homeland Security (@DHSgov) October 13, 2021
1⃣November: fully vaccinated travelers—w/proof of vaccination—from Mexico or Canada can enter the US at ports of entry for non-essential reasons.
2⃣Jan. 2022: inbound foreign travelers must provide proof of vaccination for COVID-19. https://t.co/Jl4OqwfgTA
Mayorkas noted that cross-border travel creates significant economic activity in border communities and benefits them overall.
The only doses that so far are not allowed by the U.S. government to cross are the Cansino and Sputnik V doses. With this, only Mexicans immunized with Pfizer, Moderna, Sinovac, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca and Sinopharm will be able to access the neighboring country since they are the ones authorized by the WHO.

With these new regulations, Mexicans will be able to go to the United States to visit family and friends or for tourism after waiting more than a year and a half due to border restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
