This Wednesday the State Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Coepris) analyzed certain beers from Baja California and detected E. coli in some of them. This bacteria is found in feces.
A total of 11 craft breweries in the state were analyzed and the result was that four of them contained traces of feces. The analysis was carried out because 12 people got sick and all of them had consumed this type of beer.
According to what the head of Coepris, Marco Gámez, informed to the local newspaper El Imparcial, they had been receiving complaints for several months about certain craft beers that caused heartburn among other stomach affections.
This incident may have occurred due to a deficiency in hygiene at the time of beer production, so they will talk to the brewing sector so that this does not happen again.
E. coli commonly lives in the intestines of healthy people and animals. Most strains are harmless or cause brief diarrhea. However, some strains, such as Escherichia coli O157:H7, can cause anything from severe abdominal cramping to bloody diarrhea and vomiting.
