Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarías Zapata, only 18 years old, died after being in an induced coma for five days following a knockout she suffered in a fight last weekend at the IGA Stadium in Canada.

The young fighter was hospitalized in a Montreal hospital where she was taken after the fight against Canadian Marie Pier Houle, and the company Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM), promoter of the fight, announced the death on social media.

Zacarías Zapata received a series of strong blows to the head from her opponent that led the referee to stop the fight because, although the Mexican was still standing, she was visibly affected.

A hard hook took out Jeaanette's mouth guard and her neck suffered a whiplash, so after a few seconds she began to convulse, the emergency team arrived quickly to the ring to give her assistance.

Following the death, her rival, Marie Pier Houle, posted a comment lamenting the loss. "The sad news of the departure of a great athlete like Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, leaves me saddened and devastated. I offer my sincere and deep condolences to her family and her husband Jovanni Martinez. May God enlighten her soul and receive her in his glory," she wrote on her Facebook account.
