This Sunday, August 22nd marked the 50th anniversary of the opening of Friendship Park since its inauguration in 1971, the binational park located on the San Diego - Tijuana border at Imperial Beach and Playas de Tijuana. During the commemoration of this important day, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria took the opportunity to talk about the situation of the border closure.

Gloria began by thanking everyone present and recounted the history of the park and what it means to both countries, then he went on to mention the border closure going back to March 2020 when the world was quarantined due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

This anniversary falls right on the day where the extension of border restrictions were announced. "Our border has been restricted since March 2020. Since then regular visiting hours have been closed!" said the mayor. "Standing here, there is no indication of when they will be lifting the border restrictions and when regular visiting hours will return."

Friendship Park remains open, but with a ban on visitors due to the current border restrictions until September 21 of this year.
