The coronavirus will be a challenge for Baja California during the winter season

"The winter season will hit hard, we have to get ready now, and that is what we are doing", said the Secretary of Health

A month ago Baja California registered 353 active COVID-19 cases, yesterday they totaled one thousand 292, and today they rose to one thousand 402, already approaching the record date for such cases, which was in January of this year, with one thousand 489 .

"This is the seventh consecutive (rising) week, and in the last four weeks the number of active cases quadrupled. We knew this was part of the third wave", said the Secretary of Health, Alonso Pérez Rico.

Although all municipalities reported an increase in cases, Tijuana continues to account for the majority of them, accumulating 598 cases.

According to Pérez Rico, one thousand 263 of these cases are mild, and only 139 others had to be transferred to a hospital unit, which are few compared to the day in which there were more hospitalizations, in December 2020, with 656.

However, he said, "we are already reconverting hospital units and preparing auxiliary hospital units; not because of this third wave, which we foresee will continue to increase for 10 to 14 more days; but to prepare ourselves for November, when the winter season comes, it will be a challenge for the territory".

The hospitals to be reconverted are three of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and two of the Secretariat of Health (SSa). Regarding the latter, its director mentioned that approximately 40% of the beds will be used to attend COVID patients.

"The winter season is coming hard, we have to prepare now, and that is what we are doing," said Pérez Rico.

We recall that last year's so-called "black winter" was when there were more COVID-19 infections, due to the weather conditions and to the fact that this is when most illnesses, such as flu or colds, occur. In addition the population had not been immunized with an anti-COVID vaccine at that time.

On the other hand, in the last 24 hours there were three unfortunate deaths in the state, two of them occurred in Mexicali and one in Tijuana; as well as 226 new cases, of which 93 belong to Tijuana, 59 to Mexicali, 43 to Ensenada, 14 to Rosarito, nine to San Quintin and eight to Tecate.

So far in the pandemic, 55 thousand 289 people have been confirmed with coronavirus in Baja California, and 8 thousand 909 have passed away due to this disease.
