Baja California registers almost 400 new cases of COVID-19 in one day

So far in the pandemic, the state has accumulated 55 thousand and 63 positive cases and 8 thousand 906 deaths

Cases of COVID-19 in Baja California skyrocketed from Wednesday, August 18 to Thursday, August 19, according to the latest report from the Secretariat of Health.

In the last 24 hours, 394 new infections were registered, of which 186 belong to Tijuana, 88 to Mexicali, 62 to Ensenada, 26 to Rosarito, 13 to San Felipe, 11 to San Quintin, and eight to Tecate. In this period 14 people unfortunately passed, however these correspond to August 3, 13, 16, 17 and 18, said the head of this agency, Alonso Pérez Rico.

With these figures, the entity accumulates 55 thousand and 63 positive cases and 8 thousand 906 deaths, so far in the pandemic.

Baja California also increased the number of active cases from 1,025 to 1,292 as of this Thursday morning, August 19, most of them located in its most populated municipality: Tijuana, which shows an upward trend, but still has the lowest incidence in the state (30.27 per 100 thousand inhabitants).

"Today we had a significant rise, this is at the expense of the Mexican Institute of Social Security and the Secretariat of Health, fever clinics are reporting more cases; we still foresee seven to 10 days of this rise in this third epidemiological wave, and then we will start to see flattening and decline. That is precisely what we want," said Pérez Rico.

So far, most of the active cases in the entity have been mild, and many of those who have required hospitalization are because they do not have a vaccine against COVID-19, or did not finish completing their scheme, as noted.

On this occasion, of the 1,292 active cases, 1,193 are mild, 74 are hospitalized, and 55 are intubated. Of the latter, 51 are not vaccinated, three have an incomplete vaccination schedule and only one is fully immunized.

In view of this, Pérez Rico reaffirmed that the vaccine is working, since there are no hospitalizations as in past waves.
