Baja California has already done what is necessary to reopen the border: Secretariat of Health (SSa)

Restrictions on non-essential travel between Mexico and the U.S. will remain in place until August 21

The lifting of restrictions on non-essential crossings between Mexico and the United States is an issue that has pushed the governments of both countries, especially after the progress in the vaccination against COVID-19.

Initially, the U.S. requested the Mexican authorities that the cities on its northern border reach herd immunity, so that such "reopening" would be possible. In the case of Baja California, the state with the greatest cross-border mobility, complied with this immunity on July 8, and even its Secretary of Health, Alonso Pérez Rico, said that they had already done everything within their power so that the U.S. would lift the restrictions.

With this he referred to the fact that in addition to the herd immunity, they are also vaccinating the migrant population that is in their territory; and in turn they have been in contact with the local authorities in California, such as San Diego and Imperial.

Let's remember that Todd Gloria, mayor of San Diego, is one of the authorities who has demanded Joe Biden's administration to normalize the flow at the border with Mexico, since businesses are being severely affected economically.

On the other hand, after the call between the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, it is expected that an agreement will be reached soon.

Especially in light of the announcement that a delegation of eight high-ranking officials from the neighboring country will visit Mexico today to address this and other issues.
