If there is one thing we have heard over and over again, it is that the reopening of the U.S.-Mexico border will only happen if conditions allow it. However, what seemed to be moving smoothly has now been stalled.

The vaccination campaign in San Diego has stalled and not even the most generous incentives seem to do the trick for people who have determined not to get inoculated to do so. On the other hand, in Tijuana, the donation of more than one million vaccines filled Baja Californians with hope.

Unfortunately, the numbers continue to rise on both sides of the border and this Monday, Baja California and all the states that make up the border are in yellow. This can only mean a delay in the border reactivation.

The only thing that could give us hope is the pressure that has been applied by the border chambers of commerce, who argue that businesses on the U.S. side of the border have been affected by the low flow of tourists. In fact, since the restrictions were established, 200 businesses in San Ysidro have closed.

Likewise, important politicians, such as San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, are in favor of the reopening and called the federal government's decision to extend the restrictions for another month a "mistake". Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador himself has said he will discuss the issue with the U.S. Vice President on Monday.

For the moment, the only thing that can be done is to continue with the security protocols and invite those who have not been vaccinated to do so, as this would reduce the number of infections and the fewer infections there are, the more likely it is that this expected border reopening will take place.
