This June 6, the 2021 electoral process will take place in Mexico, where citizens will go out to exercise their right to vote and elect governors, deputies, among other important political positions, but the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is not very convinced of the safety of holding elections in times of pandemic, so it has issued a warning to the country about a possible resurgence after holding the political process.

The organization asked the Mexican Republic to announce the specific health protocol so that the inhabitants could follow it to the fullest extent, as they assure that any agglomeration caused by the movement would increase the probability of a resurgence even more in coronavirus cases.

PAHO's Director of Health Emergencies, Ciro Ugarte, informed that although the risk was higher during the events that took place during the electoral campaigns, it is still very important that citizens are already informed about the preventive measures that will be implemented at the polling stations.

Likewise, the world authorities revealed that they have been working jointly with the National Electoral Institute (INE), in order to establish the necessary strategies to avoid the spread of the SARS CoV-2 virus at the polls.

Ugarte also stressed that people who are under treatment for coronavirus or are in a preventive quarantine period should not attend the polls next Sunday.

Clarissa F. Etienne, director of PAHO, declared that Mexico, Canada and the United States are the only countries that are registering lower infections in the COVID-19 pandemic, even though the American continent is one of the most affected in the last months.
