The mayor of San Diego, Todd Gloria, made a statement regarding the closing of checkpoints at the U.S.-Mexico border, mainly those belonging to the city of Tijuana, Baja California, which was recently announced to be extended until June 21 of this year.

Gloria stated that he has been discussing the reopening of the border checkpoints in San Diego with senior U.S. government officials in Washington D.C., although at this time there is no response indicating an official announcement or that the closure will be lifted soon.

Through virtual meetings, the highest authority of San Diego has been in contact with the Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosa, among other members of the U.S. Cabinet, to whom he has exposed the seriousness that the border closure causes in the hundreds of businesses along the border with Mexico.

Last Monday, May 17, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) notified that the restrictions on land border crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border would remain in place until June 21; however, the following day the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Marcelo Ebrard, announced that this measure will continue until the vaccination campaign in U.S. border cities has concluded.

For the moment, it is not known if there is a timeline or any specific strategy developed by the administration of the current president, Joe Biden, for the gradual or definitive lifting of restrictions at the border.
