Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, announced today that Mexico managed to avoid the arrival of a third wave of COVID-19 after the Easter holiday period.

Previously, the official had said that this third wave was not ruled out but that they would continue to monitor the pandemic indicators, such as the number of infections in the states that make up the national territory. During a press conference at the National Palace, Gatell explained that "it was his obligation" to say that the risk existed and thus help the population to be "more cautious".

The pandemic in Mexico has already recorded 15 consecutive weeks reporting a decrease in infections and deaths caused by the SARS Cov-2 virus, however, he emphasized to citizens once again the importance of continuing with preventive measures and establishing a balance between "hope" and "prudence" that could lead the country out of the disease as soon as possible.

Regions such as Mexico City or the Valley of Mexico showed a stable epidemic control, a panorama that is very difficult to maintain in regions such as these with a high population index, assuring that this is a matter that must be carefully dealt with.

Mexico has a total of 218 thousand and 7 deaths and more than 2 million 543 thousand confirmed cases so far in the COVID-19 pandemic that began in March 2020, according to information shared by the Secretariat of Health. This figure continues to leave the Mexican country in fourth place worldwide in the list of the highest number of accumulated deaths due to the coronavirus.

An updated report released by the federal government on April 20 showed that in reality the "official" figure is much higher than that reported daily by health agencies, announcing that the number of deaths due to covid actually amounts to 332 thousand 500.

6.68 million patients have been studied since the beginning of the health emergency, according to the head of Mexico's Health Promotion, Ricardo Cortes Alcalá, also stating that 1 million 877 thousand 347 people of the total number of reported infections in the country have recovered satisfactorily from the disease at a national level.
