Through his social media, Edgar Cardenas, a teacher at CETis 156 in Tijuana, shared that he is starting a new project of fixing computers to give them to his low-income students.

In an interview with San Diego Red, the teacher said that this project was born from an experience with one of his students at this high school.

"The other time I left them an assignment that was like Powerpoint but from Google, because we use Classroom, then the girl sent me the assignment but in her notebook, and she said to me: 'excuse me, teacher, I don't have a computer to work with. And she did it by hand, well colored and everything, and I told her: don't worry, because you can see that she wants to work hard".

This is how the teacher, through his Facebook account, invited friends and acquaintances to donate an old or useless computer, to repair it and make it functional with Chrome OS, allowing the benefited students to have Google programs similar to those of the Office suite, such as Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc.

In addition to being able to provide his students with a tool that allows them to continue studying online, the teacher said that his goal is also to motivate others or young people with an interest or taste for computers to replicate this initiative.

"The problem sometimes is time, there is not so much time to dedicate to it, that's why I need someone to help me. I know that I am not going to achieve much, but at least it is like an initiative so that maybe other young people from the technology school (he exemplified) who are more dedicated to computers, will take the initiative; or other people who say: Yeah, I have a computer workshop, I have a lot of old computers there, I'll take the initiative, I'll give them away for free. It is more of an initiative to let people know that an old computer can be used one hundred percent".

So far, two desktop computers have been donated to him, but he is missing some cables that are about to be delivered. He also received four laptops, although one of them no longer has a fix, but he commented that it can be used for parts.

The teacher shared on his social media last March 21, when he delivered the first repaired computer.

On the other hand, he mentioned that the young people who receive the computer will be chosen based on their needs and their interest in school, as he believes that "it is one thing not to have it and do nothing, there are many (students) like that".

If you want to support this cause, especially in times of pandemic where there are students who for various reasons, such as lack of a computer, can not take their classes remotely, you can contact the teacher at cardenas.edgar@uabc.edu.mx.
