This Thursday, 27 immigrants belonging to the Matamoros informal camp, located near the Tamaulipas border with the United States, finally crossed into American territory after having stayed several months (some even years) in Mexico because of the program known as ''Migrant Protection Protocol'' (MPP), also known as ''Remain in Mexico'' (Permanezca en Mexico).

Through Puente Nuevo, the immigrants crossed into Brownsville, Texas, accompanied by personnel from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), to continue with their asylum application, on orders from President Joe Biden, who invalidated the MPP pushed by former President Donald Trump during the years 2017-2021.

Last February 12, Biden reported the reactivation of asylum cases as of February 19, the day on which the website Conecta was announced, a page where a virtual census of people with active cases was carried out and subsequently instruct the interested party on the next step to take in order to continue with their process.

Before crossing into the U.S., asylum seekers had to register their personal data and undergo an anti-COVID test to finally enter the country, where they expect a court martial to review their case soon.

Since February 19, more than 100 people belonging to the migrant camp located in the city of Tijuana, Baja California, have crossed to San Diego to continue their case, but there are still many more camps to visit, since Biden will accommodate at least 25 thousand asylum cases throughout 2021.

According to the delegate of the Human Rights Commission (CNDH) in Tamaulipas, Mayra Liliana Botello, today a total of 100 people will enter the United States, forming groups of 25 individuals, who will cross every 2 hours. This action is being carried out with the help of agencies belonging to the United Nations (UN) and other institutions in charge of protecting human rights.
