Since yesterday, Tuesday, November 16, news has been circulating on social networks about the possible reopening of the U.S.-Mexico border for non-essential travel on February 30, which is totally false.

Due to the fact that the date does not exist in the calendar and even that in this month of February we will not even have a 29th day, since we are not in leap year, Facebook users have shared the news repeatedly, making fun of many others who are looking forward to the elimination of restrictions at the border crossing.

In information that is true, the Secretary of Health of Baja California, Alonso Perez Rico announced the beginning of an investigation that seeks to record the incidence and prevalence rates of COVID-19 in the northern state, which will sample residents of Tijuana, Mexicali and Ensenada.

Once the analysis is completed and if it is proven that both California and Baja California have similar rates of incidence and prevalence of the coronavirus, authorities will discuss the possible reactivation of the border.

Likewise, the U.S. government recently requested migrants with pending asylum proceedings not to approach the border, at least until they receive new instructions in their case, since it will be this coming Friday, February 19 that the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) will begin again with phase one to reactivate the asylum applications of those people who were forced to remain in Mexican territory while undergoing this process.

So far, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) has not mentioned anything about an extension of the restrictions, so February 21 continues to remain as the "deadline" date for the closure of crossings to the United States.
