PCR tests are based on a sample of respiratory secretions. The test detects the genetic material of the virus.
"It is important to keep in mind that there are people who may have the virus in their throat and not develop any symptoms," says Lopez-Gatell, and these people are considered to may be the ones who spread the virus.
Although there are few studies on asymptomatic people, for example: on a ship in the Japanese coast, in studies carried out by China, they are not studies where inferences can be made "in the Mexican society, suddenly certain waves of restlessness or misinformation come and it seems that the tests seem to be the key element to fight the epidemic" explains Gatell.
People must be isolated from the moment they are symptomatic, and their loved ones must be tracked. "The more tests, the better control, is false" the Secretary said.
There is no direct relationship between testing and control. "The key is to use the tests correctly and have containment interventions," Gatell said.
In this sense, Gatell invites the media that generates misinformation and publish articles with a lack of scientific arguments to stop.
