3 out of 10 visit Baja California for its gastronomy

The Secreariat of Tourism took stock of the first half of 2019 and Mexicali is the fastest growing destination

Of the 2 million 700 thousand visitors who arrived in Baja California during the first half of 2019, 32 percent did so for tasting the cuisine of the region, especially from Mexicali, which although it was a destination known for Chinese food, currently has one of the 5 national gastronomic routes being worthy of the title “Mexicali: The Capital of Meat” in the MDC magazine, leading publication in Turismo de Reuniones in Mexico.

Supposedly, the country's health tourism has been of great benefit for Mexicali, mainly Los Algodones, to be a popular destination among Americans who are looking for some low-cost medical procedure that meets the standards of American clinics.

The general hotel occupancy in Mexicali, registered 61.06 percent occupancy compared to 2018, which presented an indicator of 60.72 percent. Moreover, the number of air passengers increased by 8.12 percent, representing more than 43 thousand passengers.

At the end of 2019, 38 hotels in the State will be concluded in Baja California, representing an investment of 5 thousand 678 million Mexican pesos supporting the increase of 3 thousand 610 rooms of the tourist category of the State.

Between 2018 and 2019, 13 new air routes were inaugurated in Mexicali: one from Aerolitoral, one from Aeroméxico, one from the airline TAR, 1 from Calafia, 2 from Viva Aerobus and 7 routes from the Volaris airline, highlighting destinations such as Monterrey, Mexico City and Guadalajara.
