Spring Break Brings 1.138 Million Tourists to Baja

This represents 19% more than last year's

TIJUANA – Baja tourism had an important and remarkable landmark, a 19% tourism increase compared to last year's Spring Break. This increase was registered from Friday, March 18 to Sunday, April 3rd.

Close to 1,138,408 tourists came to visit seven Baja tourist destinations during this holiday season, there were also 16 cruise ships that docked in Baja with more than 14,000 passengers, which brought $1,368,000,000 pesos to the state's tourism industry.

Baja's Secretary of Tourism (SECTURE), Óscar Escobedo Carignan, stated that 'these are good numbers for the tourism industry, this is precisely the result of a comprehensive tourism campaign, to feature everything Baja has to offer and all of the perks for the family, couples and everyone to have a tourism experience that any other place in the world offers."

The average hotel occupancy for that holiday period in Baja was of 61%, Ensenada had a 69% hotel occupancy, Mexicali 64%, Tijuana 63%, Tecate and San Felipe 61%, Rosarito 60% and San Quintin 55%. However, Ensenada, Rosarito and San Felipe registered a 90% hotel occupancy just during the weekend.

Mexicali was the city with the most tourists with over 282,000 visitors, who brought more than $334,000,000 pesos. Tijuana benefited from $293,000,000 pesos, Ensenada with $279,000,000, Rosarito with $167,000,000, San Quintin with $75,000,000, San Felipe with $121,000,000 and Tecate with $95,000,000 pesos.

Escobedo Carignan also stated that foreign tourists are starting to feel safer when traveling south of the border. According to Baja's hotel industry, 56% of their guests were Mexican nationals while 44% came from abroad.
