Former Marine Tahmooressi Arrested Again

Former Marine Jailed in Mexico Runs Into Trouble Again

Andrew Tahmooressi, the former marine who was released on unprecedented humanitarian grounds back in October of 2014, after being detained in Baja California for seven months last year for entering Mexico with three weapons and over 400 rounds of ammunition has been arrested once again, this time in Twin City, Georgia, about 180 miles southeast of Atlanta.

Tahmooressi was arrested on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, for a traffic violation, carrying an open container, and refusing to take a DUI test. He will be arraigned today.

After his release, on Halloween evening in 2014, Tahmooressi was in the news once again when he was invited as the special guest of Rep. Duncan Hunter at President Obama's State of the Union address in Washington, D.C.

One interesting factor that was used in the defense to push for Tahmooressi's release was his addiction to marijuana since the age of 18. Whereas in most cases, the use of marijuana in conjunction with commission of a crime such as illegally bringing weapons into another country would not be a mitigating factor, in Tahmooressi's case it was.

Tahmooressi was released on unprecedented humanitarian grounds precisely to seek treatment for PTSD, and to seek treatment for his marijuana addiction. News reports indicated that on the day of his arrest in Tijuana, Tahmooressi had spent the day at a strip club and had bribed a police officer to let him go after he was found in possession of marijuana. Shortly thereafter, Tahmooressi claimed that he missed the last exit and ended up back in Tijuana accidentally, in possession of weapons and ammo.

The news of this recent arrest indicates that Tahmooressi is likely not seeking the treatment that were the grounds for his release. The family issued a statement shortly after his arrest stating, "We are aware that Andrew Tahmooressi is under arrest for various traffic related offenses," his family said in a statement. "The family again reminds all he is suffering from a significant mental illness and respectfully requests privacy. We all remain committed to getting him the help he needs."
