Baja Tourism Boomed this Memorial Weekend

More than half a million people visited the state

TIJUANA.- This past Memorial weekend was a great success for tourism in Baja California, according to Oscar Carignan of the state's tourism department SECTURE.

"The results surpassed our projections, and we had almost 684 thousand visitors in the state, of which at least 183 thousand occupied a hotel or motel", according to the Carignan.

The state official estimates that the economic impact is approximately 60.2 million dollars or the equivalent of 650 million pesos, of which approximately 73.36% was a result of day-trippers, and 26.64% of visitors who stayed the night.

"We are noticing an increase in day-trippers; they visit our restaurants and local businesses and return to their homes at night; this type of tourism is very dynamic and has the greatest positive impact on our local businesses", according to the official.

Carignan indicated that this weekend's hotel occupancy is estimated to have been at around 62% in the entire state, with greater occupancy in beach areas. He further explained that "San Felipe had the highest level of occupancy, at around 70%, followed by Rosarito at 68%, Ensenada 62.5%, Tijuana at 56.6%, Mexicali at 55%, Tecate at 50.4%, and San Quintin at 37%".

The Department of Tourism estimates that these are positive figures and prove that Baja's tourism sector is experiencing solid gains.

He concluded that "it is worth noting that the State Tourism Department, via seven information booths and mobile attention centers, attended more than 1,200 visitors in the five municipalities".
