Chivas won't make Tijuana game, or will they?

Popular team is double-booked on August date

SAN DIEGO.- What is supposed to be one of Club Tijuana's historic matches might not happen when originally scheduled.

Mexico's newest First Division team, the Xoloitzcuintles, was scheduled to host Chivas Guadalajara on Aug. 3 at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana during the third week of the Apertura tournament. It was supposed to be an important event given Guadalajara is one of Mexico's more powerful and popular teams.

Turns out Chivas was double-booked.

The Mexican Soccer Federation has Guadalajara playing at Tijuana while Chivas is also set to play Spanish giant Barcelona in a friendly, part of the World Football Challenge that pairs Mexican clubs with teams from Europe and Major League Soccer at different U.S. cities.

Chivas-Barcelona will be at Sun Life Stadium in Miami. Chivas-Tijuana will be…?

Guadalajara coach José Luis Real said the league match against the Xolos has not been rescheduled but it will not be played in August. He spoke to San Diego and Tijuana media Tuesday after a Chivas morning training session at Qualcomm Stadium where his team will face Real Madrid in a friendly Wednesday.

Chances are the match will be rescheduled, possibly in September. The coach praised the fact that Tijuana is now a First Division team.

"It is important to us. It helps connect us with our fellow Mexicans living in the United States," the coach said. "It is great for our Chivas fans in Tijuana and all those living near Tijuana. They no longer have to make a trip to Guadalajara or another part of the United States to see us. Tijuana has been real close to having a team in the First Division and it finally has one."

But will fans in Tijuana get to see Chivas?

Stay tuned. As for the Xolos, they have not commented on the situation.

There was early speculation that Chivas could split its team and send a younger team to Tijuana while the senior team faced Barcelona. That would give the Xolos a better opportunity to earn a win. Estadio Caliente would probably sell out regardless, so both teams would benefit from that scenario.

No timeframe has been given for an announcement on the reschedule.

World champions in San Diego

Mexico's Under-17 team won the World Cup in Mexico last week. A handful of players from that team are in San Diego this week with their club Chivas de Guadalajara for a match against Real Madrid.

And there is a chance those players might see some playing time at Qualcomm Stadium.

Giovani Casillas, José Tostado, Luis Solorio and Carlos Fierro were key figures in Mexico's win against Uruguay in the World Cup final. They trained separately from the older players Tuesday morning but, Real, the Chivas coach didn't rule out the possibility of playing some if not all of them.

"We give our players a lot of opportunities," the coach said. "Our team has a base of experienced players and young players. We've also had World Champions before so this is not an unusual situation for us. Sure, they could play against Real Madrid. This is something we've already thought about."
