Municipal Administration of Tijuana on standby due to irregular crossing restrictions issued by US

This is an interinstitutional coordination measure to address migration in compliance with human rights

The 24th Municipal Administration of Tiuana led by mayor Montserrat Caballero Ramírez is currently on standby to learn the details regarding the executive order recently announced by the US government in order to limit irregular crossings in the entire border.

The head of the Municipal Agency of Migrant Assistance (DMAM), Enrique Lucero Vázquez, stated that this measure could create an oversaturation in shelters that are currently at 60% capacity.

"However, we are waiting to see what the position from the Mexican government is due to this announcement and what will be the actions that they take to address this situation," he said.

He said that this measure does not solve the fundamental issue, as migrants will continue to arrive in the city to request asylum in the United States which is why it is important to think about a comprehensive solution.

The head of DMAM emphasized that this action does not mean the closure of the San Ysidro, El Chaparral, and Otay ports of entry or the 400 regular daily crossings of CBP One through this border.

This order would only stop those who are trying to cross irregularly by jumping the wall, swimming in the sea from Playas de Tijuana, the River canalization, the mountainous area of Ejido Jacume, among others.

In the last few years, Tijuana has addressed a series of circumstances very similar to this executive order. However, there exists great coordination between the three levels of government, civil society organizations, and international agencies which have allowed them to respond in a humanitarian manner while complying with migrants and refugees' human rights when coming to the city.
