The application of the pilot program to speed up traffic at the San Ysidro Port of Entry from November 15, 2022 to March 15, 2023 has resulted in a 60% drop of non-authorized vehicle crossings into the United States through frequent traveler lanes. This information was confirmed by Mexican authorities from the three levels of government.
This temporary binational collaboration program, whose goal is to bring the port of entry to its maximum potential, has helped to make the traffic on the Mexican side move in an orderly and safe manner. It should be noted that 7 out of 10 port of entry users are part of the binational community that crosses the border several times a day in both directions.
In this program, from the Mexican side, staff from the National Institute of Migration (INM), the National Guard, the state government of Baja California, and the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Protection (SSPCM) of Tijuana all participated.
During the period from November 15, 2022 to March 15, 2023, checkup filters were established for the first time on the Mexican side to discourage the use of frequent traveler lanes by non-authorized people, in order to protect essential border infrastructure such as the Ready Lane and SENTRI lanes, which relieved 70% of vehicular crossings.
Before this program took effect, agents from US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) verified that drivers and passengers had the necessary authorization to enter into US territory through these lanes. On average, 10 vehicles per day were detected. During the 120 days in which this program was active, Mexican authorities from the three levels of government at the checkup filters discouraged the use of these lanes by non-authorized vehicles trying to get into the United States (4 vehicles per day, on average) by 60%.
A total of 553 non-authorized people were detected on frequent traveler lanes and removed from the Mexican side. On average, 31 checkup booths were opened by CBP agents, three more than the ones usually open at this port of entry, generating a positive impact on waiting times.
It should be noted that the drop in the number of non-authorized crossings was also aided by measures from the US government, such as the digital CBP One app that makes immigrant and traveler services online and easier.
The three regional levels of government agreed that this binational effort to speed up vehicular crossings to the north helped to strengthen human, economic, and political relations with both sides of the border. It has also made the flow of travelers who cross daily to work, study, or do other things much easier.
