Giant taco with octopus machaca & shrimp by “Mariscos El Mazateño” impresses in Tijuana

Chef Danny also tried a special “perrón” taco

On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tijuana, our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Mariscos El Mazateño” located at Calzada Tecnológico 473, Tomás Aquino. On this occasion he tried two tacos: a special “perrón” taco priced at $3.75 dollars ($75 pesos) and an octopus machaca and shrimp taco priced at $3 dollars ($60 pesos).

Special “Perrón” Taco

This taco has fish rind, cheese, spicy shrimp, and is served on two packaged corn tortillas. When he took his first bite, Chef Danny saw how the cheese stretched into strings. Regarding the spiciness level, our host claimed he would give it a rating of 3/10.

The outer tortilla was quite fried, while the other one was soft. Due to how big the taco was, they broke. Although it was sold as fish rind taco, it wasn’t as crunchy as originally thought despite being fried and breaded. The shrimp had a good size and a great flavor. The cheese wrapped both ingredients. For Danny, this taco was missing some vegetables, claiming that a few avocado slices would have been ideal to create a contrast between the heavy and greasy flavors of this taco. This is why this taco gets a rating of 8.8.

Price: $3.75 dollars ($75 pesos)

Octopus Machaca & Shrimp Taco

Chef Danny wasn’t sure if he should refer to this dish as a taco or a stew on a plate, due to the amount he was served. This taco has octopus, shrimp, white onion, tomato, butter, bell peppers, purple onion, and is served on two corn tortillas. To grab it, Chef Danny had to eat some of the machaca because the taco was so full.

Our host added that this restaurant managed to get the ideal octopus texture since it broke down when chewed. The butter gave the flavor a nice “punch” to the other ingredients. Regarding the size, Chef Danny said that one could make three tacos of this serving which is why this taco gets a rating of 8.7.

Price: $3 dollars ($60 pesos)
