CESPT announces contingency program in Tijuana. Water saving shortages return this Monday!

This is due to a pause in Colorado River-Tijuana aqueduct operations

Water levels at the El Carrizo dam were reduced after it stopped receiving approximately half a million cubic meters of water in the Coastal Area for 11 hours on Thursday, July 14. This occurred due to a transformer failure at electrical substation Rumorosa that belongs to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). This stopped operations of the Colorado River-Tijuana aqueduct for the aforementioned time.

General Director of Tijuana’s State Utilities Commission (CESPT), Víctor Daniel Amador Barragán pointed out that this reduction impacts water extraction and distribution system operations and could also impact the daily water supply in Tijuana and Playas de Rosarito.

Because of this, in order to recover the lost volume of water and ensure service continuity, the Contingency Water Supply Program will begin on Monday, July 18 for the cities of Tijuana and Playas de Rosarito.

The program was designed to affect the population at large the least, as well as to minimize the impact on the cities’ economic dynamics. It will last four weeks and it will consist in rationing the amount of potable water to four sectors in the cities of Tijuana and Playas de Rosarito.

In total, 378 neighborhoods will be a part of this program in order to deal with this contingency, which represents only 30% of the system supplied by CESPT, divided in four sectors. In only two occasions, there will be a water supply suspension that will last for 24 hours, which will be reactivated in less than 12 hours.

These suspensions will be carried out on Mondays and Wednesdays in the following manner:

- Sector 1: Monday, July 18 and August 1
- Sector 2: Wednesday, July 20 and August 3
- Sector 3: Monday, July 25 and August 8
- Sector 4: Wednesday, July 27 and August 10

Information regarding the sectors and neighborhoods part of the Water Administration Contingency Program will be available starting tomorrow, Saturday 16, by dialing 073, on official social state media, and on the following website: www.cespt.gob.mx.
