Tijuana’s Soriana in Plaza Río has the second most expensive basic basket in northern Mexico

Tijuana has been giving a lot to talk about in the last few months as it has found itself on the list of the supermarkets with the most expensive basic basket in all of northern Mexico and the entire country. Once more, this city was among the first places in this list, this time being ranked second place.

The head of the Federal Consumer Agency (PROFECO), Ricardo Sheffield, revealed this Monday the basic basket prices of different regions of Mexico. Recent analysis revealed that Soriana Híper supermarket in Plaza Río in Tijuana is the second most expensive mart in all of northern Mexico.

This supermarket is located in Paseo de los Héroes, Centro Comercial Plaza Río, Col. Zona Río, where the basic basket products are found priced at $991.50 pesos. Meanwhile, the supermarket in first place of the northern Mexico area (which includes the states of Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Sonora, and Tamaulipas) was Soriana Híper in San Nicolás, Nuevo León, where these products are priced at $1,043.05 pesos.

The basic basket is the most purchased products by Mexican families, which are essential to support a family of four for one week, according to PROFECO. The basic basket consists of the following products:

  • Canola or corn oil 1 bottle of 946 ml.
  • Rice grains 1 kg.
  • Brown sugar 1 kg.
  • Beefsteak 1 kg.
  • Onion 1 kg.
  • Jalapeño pepper 1 kg.
  • Pork chops 1 kg.
  • Beans 900 grs.
  • White chicken eggs 1 package with 18 eggs
  • Soap 1 pza.
  • Tomatoes 1 kg.
  • Limes 1 kg.
  • Apples 1 kg.
  • Oranges 1 kg.
  • Bread 1 package of 680 grs.
  • Potatoes 1 kg.
  • Toilet paper 1 bag with 4 pieces
  • Soup pasta 1 package of 220 grs.
  • Whole chicken 1 kg.
  • Corn tortillas 4kg.
  • Carrots 1 kg.
