Following the announcement of the extension of restrictions on land border crossings between Mexico and the United States until July 21, the attaché of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Edgar Ramírez, sent the following message.

States along the U.S.-Mexico border are actively vaccinating their respective populations against COVID-19. Expecting that the minimum recommended by the Centers for Disease Control will soon be reached, the U.S. government will continue to coordinate with the Mexican government, seeking to identify the most expeditious way to relax restrictions as soon as conditions permit.

We recall that, since March 2020 when these restrictions began, travel is only permitted for essential trips between the two countries, such as those noted below:

In view of this, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) made it clear that crossing the border by land exclusively to get vaccinated against COVID-19 does not meet the criteria to be considered essential travel.

For his part, Edgar Ramírez insisted: "the current situation does not yet allow for shopping, sightseeing or visiting family on the other side of the border".

At the same time, with this extension of restrictions, and due to health issues in the face of the pandemic and the heatwave that is registered at this time of the year, he added, "migrating illegally is the worst decision!”
