Mexican government begins vaccinating senior citizens on February 15th

According to authorities, priority will be given to the most marginalized municipalities in the Mexican Republic

The President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, informed in his press conference held in Oaxaca, the beginning of the application of vaccines to adults over 60 years of age in 333 municipalities of the nation, giving greater importance to those with a high level of poverty or marginalization.

More than 870 thousand doses from the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca will inaugurate the so called "phase 2" of the National Vaccination Plan (PVN). This stage is expected to be completed by April, at least the administration of the first dose of the formula, which already represents a great protection for the more than 15 million senior citizens residing in the country, according to AMLO's declarations.

Authorities informed that since this sector of the population represents the greatest risk of death from the coronavirus disease, the mortality rate in Mexico could drop by 80% once this entire section has been immunized.

Monday not only means the beginning of the next stage of the PVN, but it would also function as the reactivation of the PVN, since the anti-COVID vaccination day had been paused for almost a month due to delays in the shipment of medicines.

The first vaccines received three weeks ago arrived today and were subsequently distributed to one thousand 81 vaccination centers located in Sinaloa, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Nayarit, Durango, Chihuahua, Sonora and the rest of Mexico.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended to its member countries to use the British vaccine (AstraZeneca) to immunize the elderly, even though doubts about the effectiveness of its formula are not very clear. The President decided to initiate this stage in the whole Mexican territory and not to focus only in the capital of the country and the state of Coahuila, as he did initially, such a decision caused much criticism at the time from governors of other Mexican entities.
