BAJA CALIFORNIA. – As part of the efforts to make Baja California one of the national and international tourist destinations, the State Administration lead by the Governor Francisco Vega de Lamadrid, aside with the Secretary of Tourism (SECTURE) held the presentation of the project “Smart City and Smart Destination”, in a meeting with the business chambers representatives and associations related with the tourism sector.

The State Tourism Secretary, Oscar Escobedo Carignan, stated that everything is pointed towards Smart Tourist Destinations and in that way the region will be transformed in a “Smart Destination”, in order to reach the denomination “Smart City” in an international level.

In this sense, according to the World Tourism Organization (WTO), Smart Destinations are key for sustainable development by using technological solutions. And they contribute effectively in decision making based on evidence, prioritization of measures and anticipation of future scenarios, which are essential for a responsible management of tourism and its impacts.

The WTO explained how geo-referenced data, Big Data, the Internet of Things (IoT), in addition to other related concepts, represent key elements for the transition to be smarter, sustainable and competitive, in this way they’ll correspond to the decision-makers.

The state official indicated that the office representatives and corporate bodies, present at the meeting, committed to conducting an analysis; from Pingpong Innovation, to identify the basic needs of the project Smart City (as first stage), and in line with everything above, start the project formally.

Pingpong Innovation is an expert firm of technologies, in addition to consulting and technological service integration for the construction of smart cities, digital cities, safe cities and smart tourist destinations.

This meeting was attended by the Head of Special Projects of the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation, Moises Escobedo Lara, Councilmember of the Committee on Tourism, Commerce and Sister Cities of the Municipality of Tijuana, Ivette Casillas River; Director General of Pingpong Innovation, Alma Pineda Perez; President of the Council and Conventions Council of Tijuana, Francisco Villegas Peralta; in representation of the Colegio de Profesionistas en Turismo de Baja California, Miguel Angel Romo; among other business and academic representatives on the topic.
